What Form 4868 does
Form 4868 gives you an automatic six-month extension to file your federal individual income tax return; pushing the filing deadline from mid-April to mid-October. It’s the standard way to buy yourself more time without needing to explain why.
What it does NOT do
This is the part people get wrong most often: Form 4868 extends your time to file, not your time to pay. Any tax you owe is still due by the original April deadline. If you don’t pay what you owe by then, the IRS can charge interest and a late-payment penalty, even if you filed the extension on time.
Who should file it
- Anyone who won’t have their tax documents ready in time (K-1s, corrected 1099s, etc.)
- Anyone who needs more time to organize deductions or gather records
- Self-employed individuals or business owners waiting on other filings that feed into their personal return
How to file it
You can submit Form 4868 either by mailing the paper form or electronically through IRS Free File or most tax software. Electronic filing is faster and gives you confirmation it was received. If you’re planning to pay some or all of your estimated tax due, doing so electronically at the same time (through IRS Direct Pay or EFTPS) automatically satisfies the extension requirement, and you don’t need to file the form separately at all.
Deadline
File by the original tax deadline (typically April 15) to receive the automatic extension.
How Luminary can help
If you’re filing an extension because you’re missing documents, waiting on a K-1, or just haven’t had time to get organized, that’s exactly the kind of thing we help clients sort out year-round; not just at tax time. We can help you estimate what you owe so you’re not caught off guard by penalties, file Form 4868 on your behalf, and make sure nothing falls through the cracks between April and October.
