What Form 7004 does
Form 7004 gives eligible businesses an automatic extension, typically six months, to file certain business income tax returns, including forms for C-Corporations, S-Corporations, partnerships, and multi-member LLCs. It’s the business-side equivalent of the individual extension (Form 4868).
What it does NOT do
Form 7004 extends your time to file, not your time to pay. Any tax owed is still due by the original deadline. Filing late payments after that date can trigger interest and penalties even with an approved extension on file.
Who should file it
- Corporations (Form 1120, 1120-S) needing more time to finalize financials
- Partnerships and multi-member LLCs (Form 1065) waiting on K-1s or year-end reconciliations
- Any business entity whose books aren’t fully closed out by the original filing deadline
Which form your business actually files matters
Form 7004 covers a range of different business return types, and the extension length and specific deadline can vary depending on which return you’re extending (calendar-year vs. fiscal-year businesses, for example). This is one of the more common places business owners make a filing mistake — picking the wrong form code or deadline for their entity type.
How to file it
Form 7004 can be filed electronically through the IRS’s e-file system or most business tax software, or submitted by mail. Electronic filing is faster and gives immediate confirmation of receipt.
How Luminary can help
Business extensions come with more moving parts than individual ones; the right form code, the correct deadline for your entity type, and an accurate estimate of what’s owed so you’re not blindsided by penalties. Luminary can handle the extension itself, making sure it’s filed correctly for your specific entity. We can give you a realistic estimate of your tax liability so the extra time works in your favor rather than delaying an unexpected penalty.
Deadline
File by your business’s original tax deadline (March 15 for calendar-year partnerships and S-Corps, April 15 for calendar-year C-Corps) to receive the automatic extension.
